World Book Day- my findings.
Happy Saturday!
Here they are, a compilation of my Daily Notes from the week, all wrapped up in one Post in case you missed them:
World Book Day this week, which you can find out more about at worldbookday.com
It’s celebrated on April 23rd in India, why is the day different? Incidentally, it is celebrated on the same day (March 6th) in Ethiopia.
My illustration today, Little House, Big Banana Leaves is my painting of a house on the road to Addis Ababa, where hopefully everyone inside will be reading all day.

What year did World Book Day start, I hear you ask? Well, it was April 23rd 1995. This probably explains why India celebrates on that date and not in March like the UK does. India, as I know from previous research, being the world’s biggest readers. It’s also Shakespeare’s birthday. See how everything ties in?!
My illustration today is my lino cut of a pile of books. Do you have piles of books in your house?

Whose idea was World Book Day? It was first thought of by Vicente Clavel in 1922 and then taken up by UNESCO in 1995 and celebrated in the UK and Ireland.
It used to be known as World Book and Copyright Day or International Day of the Book.
My illustration today is another pile of books. This time my painting in watercolour and gouache.

Happy World Book Day in the UK today! In the USA, India and elsewhere WBD is still held on the original date of April 23rd.
Why? Because in the UK, April 23 is usually in the Easter Holidays and children want to participate on a school day.
Hence the move to the first Thursday in March!
I’m including two illustrations of the same thing today, to honour this: 1 pile of books, 2 mediums!

The theme for World Book Day this year is Read Your Way. I never knew there was a theme before!
My highlight of WBD occurred when I was driving home, and I glanced in the rear view mirror. The lady in the car behind me, travelling alone, had cat’s whiskers painted across both cheeks. I loved that.
Did you see anything out of the ordinary, what was your highlight?
My illustration today is, yes, another pile of books. This time painted with watercolour.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, as World Book Day passes the baton to International Women’s Day.
I’ll be back tomorrow with a new mission to explore!
